I certainly do agree, dating can be challenging. At 59, I can relate to many of Pepper's dating experiences and found myself chuckling as I read her article.

Not too long ago, I met a nice looking gentleman on an Internet site. His photo was pleasing and he was able to communicate well in writing. We exchanged the appropriate number of emails before deciding to meet over dinner. I remember driving up to the restaurant, noticing an obese fellow out front, smoking a cigarette. My thoughts ran to, "Lord, I hope that isn't him." Sure enough, this was the guy and he looked nothing like his photograph. Later, I realized the picture had to have been ten years prior at his retirement from the fire department where he worked. We ordered dinner and he proceeded to talk, nonstop, about himself and his accomplishments for an hour and a half. Every time a waiter came to our table, he spoke in Spanish and I had no idea what he was saying. The "frosting on the cake" came when after paying our bill from the table, he paused from his constant chatter to say, "My.....I don't know anything about you." I thought for a moment and replied, "Ask me a question, I'd be more than happy to answer it." After a brief silence, he looked at me and said, "I don't have one."

What arrogance and self-absorption! As I drove away from the restaurant, I thought to myself, there is NO room for a relationship in this man's life. He's in love with himself!!

To add to the growing list of things you can do with your cell phone, now hear this: If you are feeling a little lonely or at loose ends, a growing number of cell phone services offer a chance to see if true love is just around the corner. Yes, sometimes the very one on which you are standing.

Here's how it can work, as told through the experience of 27-year-old Juston Payne:

Headed to a bar in Manhattan recently, he was in the mood to get to know someone new. So he logged on to Meetmoi, a mobile dating service.

He then scrolled through a list of profiles on his mobile phone and found a like-minded stranger in the area. The two swapped text-messages and soon met up for a drink and a game of Skee-Ball.

"It's simple and it's immediate," said Payne, 27, who checks in with Meetmoi, once a week. He's already been on two casual, on-the-go dates in the city.

"It just takes away the whole kabuki dance that goes on with Internet dating," he said.

Of the nation's estimated 213 million mobile phone users, 3.6 million used a mobile dating service in May 2007, according to M:Metrics, a Seattle-based mobile research firm. Mostly used by men ages 18 to 34, use of such services has grown with the services themselves.

"For younger folks, the phone plays a very different role in their life than it does for older Americans," said Mark Donovan, an m:Metrics analyst. "To them, it's a tool to entertain, to connect with their friends, to flirt and meet new people."

Some "traditional" - meaning Internet - dating websites like Webdate and Match.com are rolling out mobile services, and there are a handful of stand-alone ventures such as Meetmoi, Zogo and Jumbuck Entertainment's Fast Flirting, as well.

All work similarly, allowing users to scan profile and contact potential dates, using various screens to protect identities. (Geography is not necessarily always a factor.)

Most are free to register. Meetmoi charges 99 cents for 10 back-and-forth messages. Though now free, Zogo may soon be starting a monthly subscription. And for about $3 per month, users can chat on the Fast Flirting service for up to 10 minutes.

Users beware: some cell phone providers charge per text message, sent and received.

Safety is always key. All connections are made anonymously, and only users can reveal their true identities if they choose. And should a meet-up occur, it's always advised to do it in a public place, like a bar or coffee shop.

"There's a paradigm shift in dating," said Meetmoi's founder Andrew Weinreich, who declined to disclose how many have signed up with his new service. "With online dating, you've got to sit in front of a computer, email someone, get an email a week later, arrange a date, pick the place Too much hassle.

"Now you can flirt with or meet someone instantly."

Zogo, with about 6,000 members, was launched last year by Gabby Golan, who also wanted to take Internet dating to a new level.

"You can do it on the go," Golan said. "You can be spontaneous, you can be out and about and meet someone, right then and there."

It worked for Sara Salas, a 21-year-old from Anderson, Calif., who met her fiance, Travis Sapp, last March through Zogo.

"I had been on a lot of the dating websites -- a few of them I actually paid for -- and I wasn't too impressed," Salas said. She turned to Zogo, found that Sapp, from Sacramento, was a match, and the two started having text. That led to phone calls, a meet-up and real-time dates. Now they're living together.

"We just had a whole lot in common. It was like we've known each other our whole lives," Salas said. (A wedding date hasn't been set.)

But it's not always about getting hitched or finding true love. Sometimes it's just about flirting, frittering away idle time or just having fun.

Jumbuck's Fast Flirting service fancies itself more like a quick, flirty encounter at a bar than the first day of the rest of your married lives.

"It fills an immediate need for interaction and gratification," said Olivia Hilton, CEO of Jumbuck Entertainment, whose service has about 310 American visitors a month and about a million worldwide,the company says. "While we do know that one or two people have decided to meet in person, and we have had feedback on one or two marriages, (Fast Flirting) is a way to meet people from all over the globe in the context of a fun, social, safe environment."

Leta Shy, a 25-year-old medical editor from San Francisco, did it last week while trapped in the back of a car on a road trip to Lake Tahoe.

"It's just something to do when you're bored," she said. "I'll be standing in line somewhere, or riding the BART to work. It's just fun to talk to people that you wouldn't normally talk to."

DON'T KILL THEM WITH ADJECTIVES
Sift through a dating site, and you'll find unending lists of adjectives: smart, kind, funny, adventurous, honest, caring... Why not just include uncreative, cliched and boring?
Ditch the list. Make your new mantra that old writing maxim: Show, don't tell.
"Don't tell me you're athletic -- tell me about the marathon you just ran," Eric Resnick, founder of Profilehelper.com, said. Don't say you like to travel -- talk about your trip to the Great Wall of China.
Avoid the robot-filling-in-a-survey voice and go for a tone that's more natural and personal.
Keller recommended something he called "The Next-door Neighbor Test," which he said almost everyone fails.
"Read your profile and pretend it was written by your neighbor. If it looks like it could just as easily be his, then it's not a good profile," he said.
It's also a good idea to survey the competition. Look at the profiles of other people in your demographic, and make sure you're different.

THE PHOTO
Even though starry-eyed suitors might say it's what's on the inside that counts, don't fool yourself: Your photo is perhaps the most important element of your profile.
Experts have a couple of strict rules. For men: "I don't care how well-built you are, keep your shirt on," Resnick said. "Women are laughing at you."
For women: "No bikini shots. And if you're going to put up a bikini picture, don't be surprised if you get a lot of e-mails from guys you don't want to meet," Resnick said.
Avoid wearing sunglasses and hats, which can make it look as if you've got something to hide.
Dark, brooding shots usually aren't a good way to go, either.
"Smile," Resnick advised. "People try the serious shot because they want to seem professional, but you want to look like someone people would want to spend time with. People like happy people."
Another tip: Don't post too many bar shots with drinks in your hands, or multiple shots of yourself wearing the same clothes.
Be careful about cropping out other people from your pictures. Your ex's disembodied hand hanging around your shoulder does not send the right message.
"It's a lot like going to a video store," Keller said. "People walk through the aisle and when they see a cover that looks interesting, they flip it over and read the back. On dating sites, the photos are the cover and the profiles are the back."

STAY OUT OF THE PAST
Nobody wants to hear how your ex-girlfriend cheated on you or your ex-husband was such a bore. Would you want to spend time with someone hung up on somebody else?
Another warning sign: People who keep mentioning the importance of "honesty."
"All it does is make it sound like you were lied to and aren't over it," Resnick said. "And don't ask for monogamy -- it's expected."
A better approach is to talk about the present -- what you've done recently, what makes you happy, what interests you -- and the future -- countries you hope to visit, books you hope to write, extravagant meals you plan to cook.

DON'T TRY TO BE A COMEDIAN
"Baby, you must be tired because you've been running through my dreams all night."
Nothing can cause prospective paramours to cringe like a string of bad jokes.
"Don't say `I'm going to write a funny profile,' because you're going to end up sounding like you tried to write a funny profile," Resnick said. "You just want to be yourself."
It's OK to make jokes, but don't treat your personal ad as an open-mic night. Firing off one-liners is a way to hide, not a good way to introduce yourself.
That doesn't mean you should be stiff and serious, though. Tell a funny anecdote, talk about a quirky movie, show you can laugh at yourself.
Self-deprecating jokes can work, but don't go overboard -- if you call yourself an idiot, nobody will have any reason to doubt you.
"Don't force it," says Resnick. "If you're not the class clown, you're not going to have a funny profile."

"Don't just sit back and wait to be found," Fox said. "Perseverance is really important here. It's a process that works, but you have to stick with it."
